DESCRIPTION
This is a vintage photograph of the Calcutta High Court, one of the three High Courts in India established by Letters Patent by Queen Victoria. It is the oldest High Court in India located in BBD Bagh, Kolkata. It was first established as the High Court of Judicature at Fort William in 1862, with Sir Barnes Peacock as its first Chief Justice. The stunning High Court building was designed by the then government architect Walter Long Bozzi Grenville. He modeled the High Court on the Cloth Hall, Ypres in Belgium.
This photograph taken from the Calcutta High Court shows the expansive panorama of the neighborhood Dalhousie Square now known as B.B.D. Bagh which is considered as one of the best remnants and concentrated zones of British colonial architecture in the world. It is still the commercial and political center of all of East India and many of the business and political institutions from the colonial era still exist.
